The AWI thanks all employees, partners and sponsors for the good cooperation in 2025 and wishes you happy holidays and a healthy New Year 2026!

Inside AWI

Dear readers,

as the year draws to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal and ever-growing readership! We hope you have enjoyed the range of topics covered in our newsletters over the past few months. Rest assured that there will be many more in the new year.

We are looking forward to the upcoming holidays and the new year with great anticipation. But before that, we would like to take a brief look back with you. At the beginning of December, for instance, we presented the AWI Friends Association awards at our Christmas party. Congratulations to all the winners! There have also been some scientific developments. AWI scientists have used AI to analyse the calls of bowhead whales. The results suggest that they reproduce under the sea ice northwest of Svalbard, using the open water of the eastern Fram Strait as a migration route.

We have also been present in Berlin for the past few days, at the Arena industrial monument right on the Spree River. "Polar Experience" is the name of an immersive exhibition about the Arctic and the Antarctic, with plenty of content from the AWI.

We wish you a restful Christmas season and relaxing holidays.

Press Release of the Month

What calling and singing reveal about bowhead whales

Bowhead whales likely reproduce beneath the sea ice northwest of Spitsbergen, while using the open water in the eastern Fram Strait as a migration corridor. Researchers in the Ocean Acoustics Group at AWI came to this conclusion after recording the calls of bowhead whales using underwater recorders and analysing the recordings with artificial intelligence.
