The green light has been given for the construction of the new Polarstern: The shipyard "thyssenkrupp Marine Systems" will build the icebreaker in Wismar and hand it over to the AWI in 2030.

Inside AWI

Dear readers,

The year is drawing to a close and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal and growing readership!

We very much look forward to the upcoming holidays. But first, we want to share the latest news from the AWI with you: An important milestone for the AWI was reached at the end of the year. The new construction of our icebreaker Polarstern has now been officially commissioned to the thyssenkrupp Marine Systems shipyard. An innovative research vessel is to be handed over to the scientific community by 2030. On the website polarstern.awi.de/en/ you will find all information about the new construction project.

Moreover, in the past two weeks, two very important publications have been released: firstly, AWI researcher Dr Johann Philipp Klages recently made the first-ever discovery of amber in the Antarctic. In other news, his colleague Dr Helge Gößling investigated the causes of the rising temperatures in 2023. His conclusion: fewer low-altitude clouds led to a reduction in Earth’s reflectivity (albedo), limiting the planet’s ability to reflect sunlight back into space. This factor contributed to higher mean temperatures last year.

To make sure you don’t forget us during the holidays, I’d like to announce an event in January: we’ll celebrate the 20-year anniversary of our Antarctic ice project "Library in the Ice" at the City Library in Bremerhaven on 24 January. Save the date! You are cordially invited to get to know our colleagues on site during a live broadcast to Antarctica.

Wishing you a restful Christmas season and relaxed holidays,

Marlena Witte

Press Release of the Month

First-ever amber found on the Antarctic continent

Roughly 90 million years ago, climatic conditions in the Antarctic were suitable for resin-producing trees. A team of researchers led by the Alfred Wegener Institute and the TU Bergakademie Freiberg have now documented the southernmost discovery of amber in the world.

Anniversary Event: Library in the Ice

The art project "Library in the Ice" is located in the immediate vicinity of the Neumayer Station III in the Antarctic. This one-of-a-kind library is now celebrating its 20-year anniversary. To mark the occasion, there will be an anniversary celebration at Bremerhaven’s City Library on 24 January.

AWI Director Receives Prestigious Honour

The Principality of Monaco recently selected Antje Boetius for admission into the Order of Saint Charles and Grimaldi, founded in 1858. Admission into the Order reflects the outstanding contributions made by the marine biologist and AWI Director.

AWI Study Investigates the Rising Temperatures in 2023

In 2023, the global mean temperature was nearly 1.5 degrees Celsius above the preindustrial level. A team of AWI researchers led by Helge Gößling have identified a potential cause: fewer low-altitude clouds reduced Earth’s albedo, as a result of which less solar radiation was reflected.

"Thin Ice" Exhibit at the Deutsches Museum

The special exhibit on the MOSAiC expedition has now moved from Berlin to Munich: under the motto "Join Us on a Climate Expedition!", the exhibit invites visitors to the Verkehrszentrum (transport museum), part of the Deutsches Museum, to come on board the Polarstern and see what it feels like to be part of an expedition. "Thin Ice" will be open in Munich through 9 November 2025.
