Researching Munitions Contamination in the German Bight – A Crucial Step for Environmental Protection 🌊🔬 As part of an expedition to the German Bight, scientists from the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, accompanied by SeaTerra, investigated munitions contamination and its impact on the marine environment using state-of-the-art technology. A significant milestone: For the first time, we successfully retrieved sea anemones (Metridium senile) directly from a historical war wreck, the SMS Ariadne, to analyze their exposure to pollutants. This research is crucial for understanding how explosive residues and other contaminants impact marine organisms—and, ultimately, the entire food chain. With the support of SeaTerra and a specially designed crawler, we collected targeted samples that provide valuable insights for environmental protection. Munitions waste in our oceans is an often-overlooked problem with long-term consequences for ecosystems. Our work contributes to more effective assessment of these risks and the development of solutions for a more sustainable future. #REMARCO #MarineResearch #EnvironmentalProtection #Sustainability #MunitionsContamination #OceanScience #Science Interreg North Sea Programme Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Helmholtz-Zentrum für Polar- und Meeresforschung SeaTerra GmbH Geophysics & EOD Services
