Fotos: Lukas Weis

About us
As the Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, the Alfred Wegener Institute is primarily active in the cold and temperate regions of the world. Working together with numerous national and international partners, we are actively involved in unravelling the complex processes at work in the “Earth System”. Our planet is undergoing fundamental climate change; the polar regions and the oceans, which play central roles in the global climate system, are in flux. How will planet Earth evolve? Do the phenomena we’re observing represent short-term fluctuations or long-term trends? Polar and marine research has always been a fascinating scientific challenge; today it is also research into the future.

🇬🇧 #GEOMARNews | All Aboard for the Third “Floating University” 🎓🌊 Today, the German research vessel #POLARSTERN sets sail from the subtropical Mindelo, Cabo Verde, on a special expedition. On board are 13 Master’s students from West Africa, who will experience marine research at first hand during the two-week voyage to Bremerhaven, Germany. They will be joined by experienced scientists from different countries and disciplines. The “Floating University” is taking place for the third time under the leadership of the GEOMAR and contributes to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under the #WASCAL programme (West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use).

Researching Munitions Contamination in the German Bight – A Crucial Step for Environmental Protection 🌊🔬 As part of an expedition to the German Bight, scientists from the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, accompanied by SeaTerra, investigated munitions contamination and its impact on the marine environment using state-of-the-art technology. A significant milestone: For the first time, we successfully retrieved sea anemones (Metridium senile) directly from a historical war wreck, the SMS Ariadne, to analyze their exposure to pollutants. This research is crucial for understanding how explosive residues and other contaminants impact marine organisms—and, ultimately, the entire food chain. With the support of SeaTerra and a specially designed crawler, we collected targeted samples that provide valuable insights for environmental protection. Munitions waste in our oceans is an often-overlooked problem with long-term consequences for ecosystems. Our work contributes to more effective assessment of these risks and the development of solutions for a more sustainable future.

Foto: Oceano Azul Foundation / Pedro Pina

Even as the international system faces growing instability, the Arctic remains a space where cooperation continues to hold strategic and environmental importance. In part three of our Future of the Arctic Council podcast series, recorded live at this year’s Arctic Frontiers conference, Dr. Volker Rachold, Head of the German Arctic Office at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, and Dr. Elana Wilson Rowe, Research Professor and Head of the Center for Ocean Governance at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), explore how Arctic cooperation fits into the broader global governance landscape. In a session organized by the Fridtjof Nansen Institute, Polar Geopolitics podcast - Arctic and Antarctic analysis, and Arctic Frontiers, Rachold and Wilson Rowe discuss the Arctic Council’s vital role in addressing environmental challenges, the growing influence of observer states, and the unique ways scientific collaboration has anchored these countries in Arctic affairs. This is the third and final episode in our podcast series on the future of the Arctic Council, recorded live at Arctic Frontiers in Tromsø, Norway, on January 27, 2025. 🔈Listen on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/dRXBFmyZ 🔈Listen on Apple: https://lnkd.in/d4JPUm_y 📺 Watch on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/dVWTWR7M
